Leonard Bernstein: American Original

Tuesday, September 23, 2008

Leonard Bernstein made his legendary conducting debut at the New York Philharmonic in 1943, at the young age of 25. We celebrate the life and work of Leonard Bernstein with his younger brother Burton Bernstein and New York Philharmonic archivist and historian Barbara Haws. They’ve collaborated on a new book, Leonard Bernstein: American Original.

Hi Barbara, nice to hear you on the radio!

PBS recently rebroadcast the NY Philharmonic's concert in what had been East Berlin shortly after the wall came down. I'd forgotten that in Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, the Ode to Joy became the Ode to Freedom: every "freude" was replaced with "freiheit." I didn't know until the commentary afterwards that it was Leonard Bernstein's idea to make that change...but it's not surprising.

As a young music major at NYU, I and a few classmates went up to Tanglewood for a weekend. My friend Lori Hillman was a passionate adorer of Lenny, and as we walked down the center aisle to find seats for the open rehearsal, Maestro B. was walking up the aisle. I took a chance and stopped him, saying, Maestro Bernstein, I'd like to introduce my friend Lori Hillman. He graciously turned to her, greeted her and shook her hand. For my part, what nerve! For his part, what class!

My Mother was an avid fan of Lenny, not only for his music but for him as a man; to her, a very sexy man, LOL! We were driving on the FDR heading to Doctor's Hospital to see my Dad who was ailing at the time (this was the summer of '68) and who should sail by us in his car but Lenny...needless to say, my Mother was thrilled! My Father less so when told of this little infatuation...
