French Food
One of France’s greatest exports is its cuisine! We look at the past, present, and future of French cuisine. Also: Anne Roiphe on how she coped with being single again when her husband died after 39 years of marriage. We celebrate the life and work of Leonard Bernstein. Plus: two writers who were forced out of their homelands compare notes on being an artist in exile.
Making Art in Exile
Hear what it’s like to be an artist in exile. Leonard talks to South African writer Breyten Breytenbach and Croatian novelist Dubravka Ugresic. When Breytenbach and his Vietnamese wife tried to re-enter his native country in 1975, he was thrown in jail thanks to harsh anti-miscegenation laws. Ugresic now lives in Amsterdam; she left her country in 1991 after the media branded her a public enemy for criticizing nationalism and the war in the former Yugoslavia.

Tues. Sept. 23rd at 8:00 pm
At the 92nd St. Y

Please Explain: Eco-Labels
The Leonard Lopate Show
Your broccoli, shampoo, and air conditioner might bear labels declaring them to be organic, cruelty-free, or energy efficient, but what do those labels mean and are they true? Dr. Urvashi Rangan, Project Director for Consumer Reports' GreenerChoices.org and Consumers Union’s Senior Scientist for Policy Initiatives, and Dara O'Rourke, founder and CEO of GoodGuide.com, took a look at what eco-labels indicate, how standards are set, and what they mean for consumers and manufacturers around the world.
