Brazilian Writer Machado de Assis
19th c. Brazilian writer Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis was “the greatest author ever produced in Latin America,” according to Susan Sontag. He’s being honored at "Machado 21: A Centennial Celebration," held September 15th - 19th in Manhattan and New Haven. Leonard talks to translator Gregory Rabassa and former Brazilian Minister of Culture Sergio Rouanet.

About Machado. It is no surprise that he is unknown here, since the surge in translating and publishing Latin American writers is fairly recent (last 30 yrs.?)
The anglo-saxon market is very narrow when it comes to the literature of other languages, French being the exception, and I can tell you that Spanish writers are still out of the loop. With the exception of recent writers who are best sellers in Spain, there is a total lack of interest in important writers of the 19th and earlier 20th cent. writers. I have tried for seven years to interest any publisher in taking on the work of Francisco Ayala with no success. It is not surprising, since the works of a major and prolific writer like Benito Perez Galdos is known in English translation of only one of his novels "Fortunata and Jacinta", and one shorter story "Dona Perfecta".
