A third of Vietnam’s 80 million people live on or near the coastline. Jon Bowermaster talks about his 800-mile kayak expedition along Vietnam’s northern coastline, and what he learned about the sea’s importance to those who live near it. His new book about his journey is Descending the Dragon.

    Inand, up north - toward the chinese border i lost a family member who was with official guides who did not alert him (nor his friends) to underground pools when they went to swim in a river. Though locals had drowned there,(and teh guides knew) the newspaper account said he was the first American to drown there. A sad and senseless tragedy.
