    Love and Loss

We mark 7 years since the 9/11 attacks with a conversation on how to transform loss into a desire to help others. Also: Is it ever ethical for psychologists to participate in coercive interrogations? Then, hear about a family that made the impractical decision to buy and revitalize a zoo. And on Underreported: we unravel the complicated political situation in Thailand.

Psychologists and Torture

Some professionals are trying to force the American Psychological Association to bar its members from participating in coercive interrogations and torture. Dr. Steven Reisner is running for president of the APA on an anti-terror platform; Dr. Allan Keller is Director of the Bellevue/NYU Program for Survivors of Torture. Journalist Katherine Eban has written about psychologists and torture for Vanity Fair magazine.

Families Coping Post-9/11

Hear how two families who lost loved ones on 9/11 have since been able to transform their loss into a desire to help others. Steve and Liz Alderman set up the Peter Alderman Foundation to heal the psychological scars of terrorism victims around the world; Sally and Donald Goodrich created the Peter M. Goodrich Memorial Foundation to strengthen Afghanistan’s education systems.

How to Buy a Zoo

Benjamin Mee and his family bought a zoo in the English countryside, complete with decaying buildings and an assortment of animals, in the hopes of turning it into a sanctuary for endangered animals and a successful business. Things didn’t go as planned. Mee’s new book is We Bought a Zoo.

North American Woolly Mammoths

New DNA analysis shows that the last of the woolly mammoths, even those who lived in Asia, were all genetically North American. This suggests that woolly mammoths actually migrated in both directions over the Bering Strait land bridge, and that not all important developments in the evolution of woolly mammoths happened in Siberia. Ross MacPhee is Curator of Mammalogy at the AMNH.

Underreported: Thailand

We explain the ongoing political chaos in Thailand. On Tuesday, Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej was forced from office after the Constitutional Court found him guilty of violating the constitution for receiving payment while hosting a popular TV cooking show. Meanwhile, anti-government groups have been staging massive protests since Dec. 2007. Sunai Phasuk of Human Rights Watch joins us to talk about what’s happened, and what’s next for Thailand.

Tributes: Jeanne-Claude

The Leonard Lopate Show

Jeanne-Claude created environmental works of art with her husband and fellow-conspirator/collaborator Christo. Together, they wrapped the Reichstag in Berlin, the Pont-Neuf in Paris, and created The Gates, with billowy orange drapes, in Central Park. Jeanne-Claude just died at the age of 74. You can hear Leonard Lopate’s last interview with them both, from July 19, 1999.

Please Explain: Eco-Labels

The Leonard Lopate Show

Your broccoli, shampoo, and air conditioner might bear labels declaring them to be organic, cruelty-free, or energy efficient, but what do those labels mean and are they true? Dr. Urvashi Rangan, Project Director for Consumer Reports' GreenerChoices.org and Consumers Union’s Senior Scientist for Policy Initiatives, and Dara O'Rourke, founder and CEO of GoodGuide.com, took a look at what eco-labels indicate, how standards are set, and what they mean for consumers and manufacturers around the world.

The Leonard Lopate Show

On May 3, the Lopate Show won its third James Beard Award for our 3-ingredient challenge. In August, we asked our listeners to call in and name 3 ingredients and then challenged New York chef and 3-ingredient expert Rozanne Gold to whip up a recipe! You can listen to the 3-ingredient challenge and get some inspiration for simple, delicious, and unexpected dishes.
