    The Gut of the Matter

We take the temperature of the Democratic party. Also: a look at what Senator Obama can learn from Colorado’s Democratic governor, Bill Ritter, who’s presiding over the left-leaning political transformation of his state. Holly Heston, daughter of Charlton Heston, talks about growing up with Moses and Ben Hur for a dad. Find out why fossils found in Oregon suggest humans lived there earlier than had been previously thought. And on Underreported: do termite guts hold a solution to global warming?

Where are All the Democrats Going?

As Democrats in Denver prepare for Barack Obama’s acceptance speech tonight and the end of the convention, journalist/columnist David Sirota discusses where the Democratic Party is heading. We find out how Obama and the Democratic Party have become competitive in states that have been solidly Republican in recent years – states like North Dakota and Georgia – and what that means for voters in November and beyond.

Political Lessons from Colorado

Find out what Sen. Barack Obama can learn from Colorado’s Democratic governor, Bill Ritter, who’s presiding over a left-leaning political transformation of his state. Ryan Lizza has written an article in the Sept. 1 issue of the New Yorker called "The Code of the West."

Charlton Heston: Cinematic Atlas

Holly Heston, Charlton Heston’s daughter, talks about her father’s career in Hollywood, and tells us what it was like to grow up with Ben Hur and Moses for a dad. Walter Seltzer is one of Heston’s long-time producing partners. Both are in town for the Film Society of Lincoln Center’s celebration of Charlton Heston, “Cinematic Atlas.” It runs Aug. 29-Sept.4; go here for a full schedule of the films in the series.

Oregon Coprolites

University of Oregon archaeologist Dennis L. Jenkins and his students have found mummified human coprolites (ancient human feces) in the Paisley Caves of southern Oregon. Testing shows that the coprolites are from Asiatic peoples and are about 14,000 years old, which means that the first North Americans may have come to this continent 1,000 earlier than previously believed.

Termites

Underreported: Termite Guts

Could termite guts hold a solution to global warming? Some scientists think that a better understanding of how termites devour wood so efficiently could eventually allow us to create valuable biofuel. Phil Hugenholtz is head of the Joint Genome Institute’s Microbial Ecology Program and is involved in mapping the contents of the termite gut.

The Franken Factor

Al Franken will be declared the winner of the Minnesota Senate race recount, even though Norm Coleman is expected to challenge the results in court. Al Franken has been a guest on the Lopate Show several times, most recently in 2005. Hear him talk about his journey from performing to politics.

Caroline Kennedy on the Lopate Show
