Each party votes on a party platform during their convention, but we rarely hear about what’s in it or how it got there. John Nichols, DC correspondent for The Nation, joins us from Denver to discuss the Democrats’ 2008 party platform and what role it will play in the rest of the presidential campaign.

The Future of TV
We may have reached the end of television as we know it. What comes next? Find out why the three major networks will need to make some major changes if they want to survive, and whether niche programming and "choose your own plot" interactive options might be the future. Entertainment Weekly columnist Mark Harris has written an article for the September 2008 Conde Nast Portfolio called "Saving TV."

Pre-Fabricated Homes
Pre-fabricated housing dates back to the 1830s, when a Chicago builder developed a “balloon frame” method of wood construction to help ease the growing city’s housing shortage. A new exhibit at MoMA, "Home Delivery," looks into the past, present, and future of pre-fabricated homes. It’s on display through October 20, 2008. Barry Bergdoll is co-curator of “Home Delivery” and is Chief Curator of Architecture and Design at MoMA; architect Lawrence Sass is professor at M.I.T. and designer of the Digitally Fabricated House for New Orleans on display at MoMA.
3-Ingredient Challenge
The Lopate Show is hosting a 3-Ingredient Challenge! Think of three ingredients, and challenge New York chef and 3-ingredient expert Rozanne Gold and Leonard to brainstorm creative dishes you can make at home using just those three ingredients. Your three ingredients can be any combination that inspires you, and you don’t need to include the basics like salt, pepper, cooking oil & butter, and sugar.

The Leonard Lopate Show
Jeanne-Claude created environmental works of art with her husband and fellow-conspirator/collaborator Christo. Together, they wrapped the Reichstag in Berlin, the Pont-Neuf in Paris, and created The Gates, with billowy orange drapes, in Central Park. Jeanne-Claude just died at the age of 74. You can hear Leonard Lopate’s last interview with them both, from July 19, 1999.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, bacterial, viral, and parasitic organisms found in recreational water in the United States sicken thousands of people every year, and even result in deaths. We’ll speak with chemist and industrial hygienist Monona Rossol about the protozoa, amoebas and other things that love to go swimming with us. Monona is also founder and President of Arts, Crafts and Theater Safety.

Frank McCourt
The Leonard Lopate Show
Frank McCourt has been a guest many times on this show over the years, starting in 1996 for the memoir, Angela’s Ashes, that would earn him a Pulitzer Prize. Fame came to him late in life, after he’d retired at the age of 65 from teaching English and creative writing at public schools here in New York. He was a sweet, eloquent man who spoke with grace and humility; he just died at the age of 78 after a battle with cancer. You can hear him speaking with Leonard Lopate for his Survival Kit in 2000, and in 2005, for his memoir, Teacher Man.
