Yes Leonard a surprise because the only time they discuss Puerto Rico is during the primary season!
Never mind that Puerto Rico has been part of the Unites States for over a hundred years!
District of Columbia (D.C) is not a state and it votes for the president!
Leonard how can you have a guess to discuss Puerto Rico, who is as he says sketchy of it's history...the quality of your guess is questionable.
After the unethical behavior displayed by Hillary Clinton during this campaign the Puerto Rican community has become Luke warm toward her!
Is it sexist to call Senator Clinton Mrs. Clinton instead of Senator Clinton? I believe your guest called Mr. Obama Senator and Senator Clinton Mrs.
Most registered Puerto Ricans will not vote on Sunday, they do not feel this primary vote has any true legitimacy.
Well, the question is: Does it happen with other female Senators? If yes, then it's unintentionally sexist. If not, then it's probably because she was First Lady for eight years before becoming a Senator.
It is very upsetting that Hillary has been the only person asked to leave the race...no Republican was asked...the media has acted so unethical in covering Clinton and basically Obama as well....it is absolutely a Republican/ruling class slanting the election. My only concern is that Hillary has proven she can carry the states that matter, I love Obama but I believe especially NYC and other urban dwellers are in a love affair with the very charismatic Barrack and our making emotional decisions (lethal), and now Barrack is a little blinded by the attention...Doesn't anyone realize that the media pounding Hillary down could be yet another ruling class conspiracy in order to weed out the best contender to deal with McCain??? I heard last night from a jounalist that Fla, especially the older Jewish/Christian population are circulating that Obama is a Muslim! We just can't afford to allow the Republicans to fearmonger us into a McCain regime. I respect the Kennedys but remember the Kennedys and other backers of Barrack live priviledge lives and our OUT OF TOUCH with middle class/blue collar white America who will be the one to elect the next President, to write the woman who can speak to these folks is going to be yet another dumb Dem mistake! Mark my words.
Leonard Lopate- You're actually going to have McClellan on next week to: '...discuss the 'deeper' issues...' as regards his 'book'?!
There ARE 'deeper issues' in a book with all the depth of a saucer filled with Farina?! <-(Not to malign Farina, and certainly no disrespect to the makers of Farina!)
The so called New York Times reporter could not be more misinformed, Puerto Ricans are not enthusiastic as he claimed, I have spoken to a many people over their and the over feeling is this is not as important as it reported in the news ,a low turnout is predicted!
Although Puerto Rico is a colony of the United States for almost half of the time the United States has existed, it never seems to amaze me how little main land Americans know about Puerto Rico's history culture and people in general...you would think Puerto Rico is on the other side of the world!
I agree Elba, Imagine their are about a million in this city, and three million int the New York area. The anti Puerto Ricanism is extraordinary!
Mr. Lopate, this cubicle prisoner greatly appreciate this segment that you do, but I would have appreciated a point of view from someone on the Island such as the gentleman that Brian Lehrer had on yesterday; (or even a Puerto Rican in NYC). You mean that there are over 800,000 Puerto Ricans in the city and this is the only guy that would come on to talk about the Primary in Puerto Rico? All the other “States of the Union” that I have heard, have always had someone on who was either a journalist from the state, or involved with the politics of the state.
This segment seem to wonder away from the primary topic of Puerto Rico and the primaries, discussing issues of what commentators say on other shows...to little analysis and to much gossip!
Does any one believe their will be any follow-up regarding the primaries in Puerto Rico.
Or will we go back into the abyss that is the cultural exclusion that exist in this country.
Unless it is Eurocentric it does not matter.
The episode on yesterday's Brian Lehrer show regarding this very topic, was much more informative in regards to the issues that relate the U.S and Puerto Rican relations and a point of view that is not usually discussed on this side of the country!
yesterday they discussed the colonial issue, cultural, and history...I know you can do better than this Leonard, please have a follow up on some of these aspects, for future shows.
Long time listener!
Paulette, it's funny how perspective seems to distort people's version of the facts. You say that Hillary is the only one that was asked to leave. My goodness, the media was harping on Huckabee and asking him when he was going to leave. So I don't understand your position.
Again, about the "unethical" coverage of Hillary. Is this really true? She was the frontrunner and as a frontrunner she was grill more. That is not unethical or sexist just a reality of her frontrunner status. In fact, feminists should be happy about this because she was treated no differently than a man. Plus when she lied about Bosnia, the media only covered it for a short time compared to Obama's pastor. Next, I think many Hillary supporters are using pure emotion to vote for her. And as far as the republicans, they wanted Hillary to win because they initially thought she would be easier to win against. So I believe you analysis is light on facts and more on opinion.
Sorry Leonard but this show was low on facts and too much on opinion. Your host seemed ill informed. Disappointing.
As far as the "mess" the democrats have gotten into because of these primary. I think that would be a mistake. This primary has been singularly unique and will probably never be repeated again. In fact, we have to stop this nominating candidates too fast. We need to take our time so that we learn about the candidates and hopefully pick the best one. I even think we should break up super tuesday into smaller contests.
