Context and Product Choice

After NASA’s 1997 mission to Mars, sales of Mars Bars went up! Jonah Berger tells us more about how context affects product choice; he's assistant business professor at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School. He’s also co-authored a recent article in the Journal of Marketing Research, called “Dogs on the Street, Pumas on Your Feet: How Cues in the Environment Influence Product Evaluation and Choice.”

Utagawa: 19th Century Japanese Prints

A new exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum, ”Utagawa: Masters of the Japanese Print, 1770-1900,” looks at the Utagawa School, which dominated the Japanese print market in the nineteenth century. They portray landscapes, warriors, and kabuki actors, and were produced for mass consumption. Joan Cummins is curator of Asian Art at the Brooklyn Museum.

The Age of Shiva

Manil Suri's new novel, The Age of Shiva, follows the life of protagonist Meera Sawhney starting from her unhappy marriage in the 1950s, through her life in a changing, increasingly nationalistic India, and eventually to her own son's coming of age.

Tributes: Jeanne-Claude

Jeanne-Claude created environmental works of art with her husband and fellow-conspirator/collaborator Christo. Together, they wrapped the Reichstag in Berlin, the Pont-Neuf in Paris, and created The Gates, with billowy orange drapes, in Central Park. Jeanne-Claude just died at the age of 74. You can hear Leonard Lopate’s last interview with them both, from July 19, 1999.
