Celebrate Memorial Day with a blast of cold air! We look at the finest writing about the Arctic and Antarctic. Also, Sebastian Copeland on his amazing photos of Antarctica. Then: complexity theorist Stuart Kaufman on how science, religion, and reason can co-exist. And Fareed Zakaria explains why he says the world is entering a post-American phase.
The Post-American World
Fareed Zakaria says that post-Cold War America needs to accept that the rest of the world doesn’t revolve around us, and that our world will be re-shaped in the near future as other countries like China, India, Brazil and Russia become more and more powerful. His new book is The Post-American World.
Words from the Arctic and Antarctic
Elizabeth Kolbert co-edited a collection of the finest writing about the Arctic and Antarctic, The Ends of the Earth. The book honors four centuries of exploration and scientific study, and also is a reminder of what we risk losing because of climate change.
Photos of Antarctica
Master photographer Sebastian Copeland shares his amazing photos of Antarctica in a new book, http://www.amazon.com/Antarctica-Global-Warning-Sebastian-Copeland/dp/1933784199.
A New View of Science, Reason, and Religion

Please Explain: Eco-Labels
The Leonard Lopate Show
Your broccoli, shampoo, and air conditioner might bear labels declaring them to be organic, cruelty-free, or energy efficient, but what do those labels mean and are they true? Dr. Urvashi Rangan, Project Director for Consumer Reports' GreenerChoices.org and Consumers Union’s Senior Scientist for Policy Initiatives, and Dara O'Rourke, founder and CEO of GoodGuide.com, took a look at what eco-labels indicate, how standards are set, and what they mean for consumers and manufacturers around the world.
