Elusive Arab-Israeli Peace
Wednesday, April 02, 2008
Aaron David Miller has been working to broker Arab-Israeli peace as an advisor to U.S. presidents, secretaries of state, and national securities advisor. He tells us whether he thinks peace in the Middle East will ever be reached. He’s the author of The Much Too Promised Land: America's Elusive Search for Arab-Israeli Peace.

When Jerusalem is a open city, administered by the United Nations, the conversation about peace can begin.
Keith - Goyim means "nations" and refers to member s of the "nations of the world" i.e. any non-Jew. it's absolutely not a pejorative term. Judaism respects all human beings as being created "bitzelem elokim" - in the image of G-d.
As the saying goes, when the Arabs love their children more than they hate the Jews, there will be peace.
The competing groups - Hamas, IDF, PLO, Fatah - are all organization predicated on conflict. Once conflict goes away… these groups have no base of power. Solve this problem and you’ll go a long way toward solve the larger problem.
To Mr Miller:
The only way a 2 state solution is possible is if Israel pledges to remove a great number of West Bank Settlements in return for a Palestinian pledge to do all it can to curtail violence. That would imply Israelis arresting Jews in large numbers for resisting the removal of said settlements. That will NEVER occur without US pressure. Does Mr Miller advocate such pressure? If not, he is no more than an Israeli advocate and apollogist in the disguise of a fair arbiter.
Israel has no interest in peace. The US has no interest in anything Israel has no interest in. The "peace process" as described by the author is anything Israel and the US wants. If that means a wall, thousands of detainees held against international law and without charge, helicopter bombings etc., so be it.
The fact is: Israel is a very tiny nation surrounded by a very large "Arab" nation. Israel has very little land. They also have military dominance. Why should Israel trade land for peace when they don't want to give up the land and have the absolute upper hand in war?
The US should stop giving money to relatively wealthy Israel so that they can not continue with the never-ending settlement and expansion activity (or if they do continue with it, it is on their own dime). Then, I believe, a real peace process will begin.
Could you ask your guest if he believes the "special relationship" the United States has with Israel is detrimental to resolving issues in the Middle East because of the perception of bias (real or imagined). I understand many concerns Arabs and Palestinians have with Israel and Western involvement in the area since the Ottoman Empire, and yes, Israel is often used as a scapegoat for unrelated or obliquely related issues; however, the United States also uses Israel as a reason for why we should be involved when (in the case of Iraq) WMDs, regime change, and energy security are exacerbated as reasons for US involvement. With non Jewish Middle Easterns being portrayed as universally "evil" in US politics, is it possible for the United States to switch from being in a special relationship with Israel to an impartial arbitrator of peace? (If it is not possible, what should the US involvement be?)
How are the Pro Israel Christian Lobbyist affecting the peace effort?
It's good to see that other people listening to here and commenting don't have as deluded a view of Israel-Palestinian relations as your guest here.
WHY NOT PUT THE WHOLE GEOGRAPHICAL TERRITORY IN A BIG TIME-OUT ; CALL IT JERUSALEM. LET IT SIT IN PERPETUITY AS THE FOUNTAINHEAD FOR THE ABRHAMIC FAITHS.
CREATE AN ABRAHAMIC COUNCIL OF TWELVE TO ADMINISTER IT.
I WOULD LIKEN IT TO THE VATICAN FOR CATHOLICISM.
it's time to have gerson gorenberg as a guest, i wonder what new insights he has about this pro-israel christian lobby effort ???
This will not end until both sides forget about who is right and start thinking about what is fair!
I learned of this from the Palestinian man who lost a brother and the Israeli woman who lost her son to this struggle; they are touring the world trying to bring these two polarized sides together.
Peter - Israelis are literally dying for peace.
As Monday's NY Times reported - Palestinian society - from the Friday sermons mosques, to the textbooks to the the media is infested with a virus of hatred towards Jews and Israelis...that indoctrinates the next generation, dehumanizes people - calling them dogs & pigs & worst of all glorifies murder of kids by kids. So the peace tours you report about need to take place in the Arab/Muslim world - not in American synagogues and temples funded by American Jews for American Jews and other peace loving people. Then there will be hope for peaceful coexistence & a better future.
I'm coming to this late as podcasting from overseas. 2 things that these discussions inevitably fail to mention: 1. Israel is illegally occupying land taken in the 1967 war (and if you consider the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza as a concession you are being disingenuous; Gaza is currently a large prison). So much focus on Hamas' (by the way Mr. Lopate, it is not pronounced Khamas as your Israeli interlocutors would have you believe) lack of a recognition of Israel obfuscates the fact that Israel has not truly recognized Palestine/Palestinians as a nation/nationality.
2. The other and more important omission in all of these "Israel lives in a tough neighborhood" and "We can do nothing about the divided Palestinian house" statements is the fact that the formation of Israel created the rough neighborhood and that Israel literally created and nurtured Hamas as a divide an conquer strategy against the PLO.
