My father, living in the rural jungles of Brazil so disconnected from the world and the constant struggle of the Cold War, remembers vividly seeing Sputnik passing overhead. Of course, that far from the lights of cities, he could see it probably better than many people at the time.

It's amazing that Democrats could have such a low opinion of Eisenhower in the 1950s. I mean, he was the Supreme Allied Commander during WWII... how dumb could he really be? And he was put in that position by the hero of the Democrats, the man widely considered the greatest Democratic president to that point, FDR.

How long will the sputnik be at the IFC? The satellite, not the film.

Today's Lenard Lopate show is about russian sputnik, so this word comes up every few seconds, and they pronounce it with the letter "u" like in the word "hut" when in fact russian pronunciation is like "oo" in the word "cook".

Could the guests say anything about the push for science education that resulted from the US reaction to the Sputnik launch, & maybe the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space?
