The Leonard Lopate Show

Leonard Lopate

Happy 23 to Leonard Lopate

Wednesday, March 05, 2008

Join Leonard to celebrate his 23rd anniversary as a host here at WNYC! Also: the complexities of South Africa's AIDS crisis. A new documentary about American military doctors. Psychologist Carol Gilligan's first venture into fiction-writing. Plus: are pharmaceutical companies overmedicating us?

South Africa's Complex AIDS Crisis

In some South African villages, antiretroviral drugs for AIDS are widely available, but electricity and running water are not. Journalist Jonny Steinberg writes about the complexities of the AIDS crisis in his home country of South Africa in his new book, Sizwe's Test.

Doctors on the Front Lines

Napoleon’s chief army surgeon once said: "To be a military surgeon, one must scorn fortune, have absolute integrity, and sacrifice oneself completely to the patient." Academy Award-winner Terry Sanders’s new documentary about American military doctors is "Fighting for Life." It opens this Friday at the Quad Cinema (34 West 13th Street).

Overmedicated America?

In 2006, the United States accounted for 66 percent of the global antidepressant market. Are Americans overmedicated? and have pharmaceutical firms convinced many of us to use drugs we may not need? Charles Barber's new book is Comfortably Numb: How Psychiatry Is Medicating a Nation.

Weigh in: Do you think Americans are overmedicated? Have public perceptions of psychopharmaceuticals changed in the last couple of decades?
