Ms. Power is also an advisor to Barack Obama. Mr. Obama is accused of having empty rhetoric/idealism etc... It seems that Mr. Vieira had to balance his idealism with reality. Does she think that her study of Mr. Vieira will aid her in helping Mr. Obama balance political pragmatism/reality with idealism?
Basically does she see any similarities between Vieira and Obama?
At the time of his death, Mr. de Mello had divorced his wife and had a new girlfriend, who was separated from him after the bombing, by US security forces. Where is the girlfriend now, what has become of her, was she a source in Ms. Power's book?
I was so elated to hear that Samantha Powers is advising Senator Obama. I can't think of a better person to listen to and learn from. As always, a fabulous interview. Thank you for focusing on the book and asking intelligent questions.
More great thoughts and reporting from Samantha Powers. It's sad to hear that in our age of globalization not enough people are interested in foreign service. Do fellow citizens even have a rudementary grasp of what effective dipomats do? I look forward to the day when we will see cars with bumper stickers that say "SUPPORT OUR DIPLOMATS".
I am a long-time listener, and supporter, of WNYC, and I thought that Leonard Lopate's segment yesterday, February 21st, with Samatha Power was one of the best in my memory. She is a mesmerizing speaker; and he let her go. He commented infrequently and then only to ask a pertinent question. It was like a very exciting lecture from a professor/expert that I would, otherwise, not have access to. And what I learned about Barack Obama was invaluable. In what other forum would I have such an opportunity? Jane Hassler
