I just heard your guest compare Philip Roth to Balzac. As a great fan of both, I have to admit I'm stumped. Is it because I skipped that Mickey Sabbath novel?
I mean, I can understand comparing them because they are both novelists, and therefore deal with many similar themes. For that matter, I'd compare John Updike to Flaubert. But they're so different. Okay, any explantion you got, I'll take.
There's no Vautrin or anyone like him in any Roth book. And no Swede Levov or anyone like him in any Balzac novel.
Tell me what I'm missing - please.
