Underreported: Congo’s Ongoing Crisis

War in the Democratic Republic of Congo officially ended five years ago, but an estimated 45,000 people still die there every month. Dr. Richard J. Brennan is Health Director of the International Rescue Committee; Alyoscia D’Onofrio, regional director of the DRC for the IRC, joins us from Bukavu in eastern Congo, close to the border with Rwanda, Burundi, and Uganda.

    Leonard: Your interview on the monthly death rate in the Congo brought an under-reported, heart-breaking story to our attention. There's an even bigger "under-reported" story that is part of this tragedy. The sale of arms to the insurgents. Who is selling arms? The world-wide arms industry, with USA, France and England, leading the rest, is primarily to blame for most of the violence we hear about in the world. Along those lines, why not an under-reported story about our defense budget, $639 B/per year, excluding Iraq and Afghanistan, larger than defense budgets of all the rest of the world combined, larger than the rest of our national budget. A month ago, when DOD Secretary Gates mentioned the discrepancy between the defense budget and the Dept. of State budget ($39B), that story had a one day shelf life in the MSM. That being said, I remain a faithful listener.
