    Political Projections

America's standing in the world has become a major campaign issue. Madeleine Albright gives advice to our next president on how the U.S. can regain the world's trust. Also: the first in our new Political Projections film series looks at how Hollywood has portrayed campaigns! And we look into how people learn to live with chronic, severe illness.

Life with Chronic Illness

We look into how people learn to live with chronic, severe illnesses. Journalist Richard M. Cohen, who has MS, has followed the lives of five people who have serious conditions like ALS and bipolar disorder; he writes about them in a new book called Strong at the Broken Places: Voices of Illness, a Chorus of Hope. He’s joined by his wife Meredith Vieira of the "Today Show."

Primary Colors

Political Projections: Campaigning Goes to Hollywood

For the first in our new Political Projections film series, we look into how Hollywood has portrayed campaigns over the years. We've chosen 4 films to discuss:

"Primary" (1960)

"Tanner ’88" (1988)

"The War Room" (1993)

"Primary Colors" (1998)

Here to talk about these films are D.A. Pennebaker, an American documentary filmmaker and one of the pioneers of cinema verite. He edited "Primary," the documentary film about the 1960 primary election between JFK and Hubert Humphrey. He and his wife, Chris Hegedus, directed "The War Room," a behind-the-scenes look at Bill Clinton’s campaign for President of the US in 1992. Also: campaign consultant Tad Devine; he worked for Al Gore's 2000 United States presidential campaign.

Weigh in: What do you think of how the four selected films depict American political campaigns? Does watching any of those films change the way you think about the campaign currently underway for the November 2008 elections?

DA Pennebaker's film "Don't Look Back" will be at Film Forum (209 W. Houston St.) from Feb. 1 - Feb. 7

Tributes: Jeanne-Claude

The Leonard Lopate Show

Jeanne-Claude created environmental works of art with her husband and fellow-conspirator/collaborator Christo. Together, they wrapped the Reichstag in Berlin, the Pont-Neuf in Paris, and created The Gates, with billowy orange drapes, in Central Park. Jeanne-Claude just died at the age of 74. You can hear Leonard Lopate’s last interview with them both, from July 19, 1999.

Please Explain: Eco-Labels

The Leonard Lopate Show

Your broccoli, shampoo, and air conditioner might bear labels declaring them to be organic, cruelty-free, or energy efficient, but what do those labels mean and are they true? Dr. Urvashi Rangan, Project Director for Consumer Reports' GreenerChoices.org and Consumers Union’s Senior Scientist for Policy Initiatives, and Dara O'Rourke, founder and CEO of GoodGuide.com, took a look at what eco-labels indicate, how standards are set, and what they mean for consumers and manufacturers around the world.
