Underreported: Afghan Public Opinion Poll
Thursday, December 13, 2007
Most of the news from Afghanistan focuses on the Taliban, or US and NATO troops, or the opium poppy crop. We hear very little about what the people Afghanistan think about what’s happening to their country. Pollster and political scientist Craig Charney of Charney Research recently conducted a poll of Afghan public opinion.

Thank you for take the lid off this issue a bit more than other international news shows. I confess to still being a bit confused about whether the Afghan govt is popular, supported and moving the country in the right direction, or if the country is heading back into armed, clan-based hostilities, along a similar road that Irag seems headed. The question is important because it gets to the heart of something important: can US intervention produce a self-sustaining, improved govt, once we have pulled out most US personnel, or are we obliged to hold the balance of power in such countries forever. I hope you'll keep covering Afghanistan; and invite Dr Charney back so he can report on the views of Afghanis on an ongoing basis. Thank you.
