The Leonard Lopate Show

The Revolution Will Be Televised

Friday, October 05, 2007

If you watch a program from David Simon or Jenji Kohan, you'll never think of television as "the boob tube" again. She's the creator and executive producer of the Showtime series "Weeds" about a suburban widow who becomes a pot dealer, and he's the creator of the HBO's "The Wire", a gritty police drama set in Baltimore. They'll explain how they write and what happens from script to screen.

Event: Jenji Kohan and David Simon will be part of a panel discussion titled "Outside the Box: Television Masterminds"
Saturday, October 6th at 10:00 am
The French Institute/Alliance Française
55 East 59th Street

Tickets are $25. Call 1.877.391.0545 or visit Ticketmaster.com to purchase.

Visit The New Yorker Festival website for more information.

  • [7] bk from nyc October 05, 2007 - 11:37AM

I'm the last person in the country without cable & that's fine by me. I dispise tv news.

    favorite shows:

    all L&O

    without a trace

CSI (only the original one in NV)

inane, very boob tube - rules of engagement - very funny w/ cuttie from seinfeld.

  • [8] ab October 05, 2007 - 12:03PM

Battlestar Galactica seasons 1&2 and the first half of season 3 (please guys...fix the show! The second part of season 3 was disappointing...go back to what made the show the best sci-fi show that ever existed!)

HBO's Rome...which is no more (sniff, sniff)

  • [9] Ron from Upper Eastside October 05, 2007 - 12:10PM

"30 Rock's" the best! Alec Baldwin is hilarious. Always love "Curb Your Enthusiasm" and still watch "Seinfeld" reruns - I've probably seen each episode about five times! Also, love "Entourage" and "The Office". If I had more time I'd watch "Always Sunny in Phil.." and "Damage". I wish there were a good drama that I'm not tired of like "West Wing" or "ER".

  • [10] Constantin from NJ October 05, 2007 - 12:32PM

    Mad Men and Damages

  • [11] nina from Midtown manhattan October 05, 2007 - 12:37PM

NOVA Science Now......and History Detectives and Secrets of the Dead.

  • [12] Ron from Upper Eastside October 05, 2007 - 12:50PM

"Homicide", was one of the best shows on TV, ever! Hands down! I was so disappointed when it was taken off the air. I guess I haven't gotten into "The Wire" as much, as it's always on so late...for an hour! I need my zzzz's!

  • [13] Ron from Upper Eastside October 05, 2007 - 12:53PM

What makes Mary Louise Parker's so appealing is Mary Louise Parker! She's a great actress and she's HOT!!!

  • [14] Josephine from Paris October 05, 2007 - 01:00PM

    Law & Order... or Cops!

  • [15] Bean from Inwood October 05, 2007 - 01:02PM

At some point over the past few years I found myself saying, without hesitation, that Deadwood is/was the best TV show ever made. David Milch's John from Cincinnati was woefully underrated and sadly cut short, although may have strayed a little too far into David Lynchian territory (obscure for obscurities sake).

Of currently airing shows, The Wire, and another woefully underrated show, Brotherhood. For sheer fun, the new Doctor Who.

  • [16] mary from Williamsburg-Graham Ave October 05, 2007 - 01:13PM

    Deadwood!

  • [17] Giulia from west village October 05, 2007 - 01:35PM

    My favorites were:

    Six feet Under

    Rome

    Carnival

    But all 3 ended, boo!

  • [18] Alexis from Midtown Manhattan October 05, 2007 - 01:40PM

The Wire is THE BEST SHOW on television.

This series assumes the intelligence of its viewers and deals with issues that can make or break our society (education, labor, safety, and more), difficult and complex issues that are at best in need of new thought and at worst undealt with and ignored. This is the only show that deals with issues that exist in many cities, NYC as well; issues so apparent that I wonder how can people refuse to see? How can people know and refuse to deal with these issues that affect our cities and our lives?

The Wire does what television should do: it highlights things that need to change in our society. Television reaches into every home and should be used to intelligently and creatively expose things that need to change.

    The Wire is on point!

  • [19] H.G. from NYC October 05, 2007 - 02:05PM

The Wire is hands down the finest show on television, perhaps ever. More than just great TV (which it is), it is also the most finely crafted television show I have ever seen. It must be seen all the way through, episodes are chapters in a book, seasons are books in a series, it is the closest TV comes to art.

  • [20] Tim from Reno NV October 05, 2007 - 03:03PM

    Law & Order: Criminal Intent.

  • [21] RV from New Jersey October 05, 2007 - 03:05PM

TV show???? I listen to radio. What's TV???

  • [22] Art Vandale from Brooklyn, NY October 05, 2007 - 03:49PM

The Wire, hands down, is the smartest, well-drawn show in the history of television. I hope it stays on forever.

  • [23] Matt from bloomfield nj October 05, 2007 - 04:48PM

"weeds" rules....although its kinda odd this season, it needs a little more cliff hangers like the last two years...

i agree, where oh where has "rome" gone.." :-(

    pornacopia anyone?...lol

  • [24] Joe Adams from Bergen County, New Jersey October 05, 2007 - 06:49PM

Ken Burns' specials - The War, Jazz, the Civil War, Baseball- raised TV to its highest potential and yet did it in an intelligent, non-hyped, non dumbed-down the way some of cable and all of Network TV. Incidentally, I've suffered through "Without a Trace" twice and I think it is the biggest piece of crap on the airways, dumbed down to sub-idiot level.

  • [25] Lori from Kensington, Brooklyn October 05, 2007 - 07:01PM

    I agree with Ron,

I miss Homocide so much - and I cannot stay up late to watch The Wire, although it is great.

David Simon really is a hero of mine, artistically and politically.

  • [26] Sheila from Long Beach October 05, 2007 - 07:08PM

favorite tv show this season is Damages but my son has me hooked on The Wire
