Probably the one book that changed my whole view of my country and it's society was the "Autobiography of Malcolm X" (as told to Alex Haley, by the way.) The book had an enormous effect on me. Living in New York, and working in a factory in Brooklyn, I knew there was another America, made up of millions of people, living in the shadow of a society with a different face. When I read the book, it opened up that world to me in a new way.
Racism will always be with us, but looking back, America has had a happier outcome that could have been expected, all things considered, from that point in time. Let us hope for continued progress.
