Open Phones: NYC's Ugly Buildings

Wednesday, September 19, 2007

Leonard takes your calls on NYC's ugliest buildings. What do you think is the worst building in New York? What makes it ugly, awful, or dysfunctional?

Tune in to hear more about NYC's worst buildings on September 25, when NY Times Streetscapes columnist Christopher Gray joins us to share his winning (or should we say losing) choices.

My suggestion is to allow listeners who do not have computers or are not computer-literate enough to download a digital photo and then email it - why can't you allow those people to mail in a hard copy of a photo and then your people can scan the photo into the program that is collecting the photos?

    **Lopate Show responds:

Due to the volume of submissions, we just don't have the time or the staff to hand-scan hard copy submissions.

Re Lopate on ugly buildings this morning. The building at 60th St. & CPSouth in Manhattan is a landmarked apartment house built in the 1950's modernist style. You might consider having a program sometime discussing and explaining about landmarking and zoning - and remind listeners that they can attend any community board meeting; can apply to be a public member of a Board committee (Landmarks; Land Use and Zoning); or apply to become a full voting member of a Board. There's a lot to be done and NYC citizens do have outlets for their opinions on a basic level. Thanks for an interesting program - I look forward to the program with Mr. Gray.

Bonnie, a pertinent point. Bulk is the message - appearance is only the messenger.
