Don't Eat With Your Hands
On today's show: why cashing in on global warming may become the great game of the 21st century. We'll also find out about a remote Israeli village where all residents - both hearing and hearing-impaired - communicate by a unique form of sign language, and what that reveals about the connection between language and the brain. Plus: one man's cross-country journey to find the best food America has to offer, from fast food to organic produce. Also, a cookbook that helps vegetarians and meat-lovers eat together.
Sign Language and the Brain
In the remote Israeli Bedouin village of Al-Sayyid, an unusually high percentage of the population is deaf. Everyone in the village - whether or not they're hearing impaired - communicates in a unique, local form of sign language. New York Times reporter Margalit Fox followed researchers into the village to explore the connection between language and the human brain. Her new book is Talking Hands.

Flexitarian Cookbook
Believe it or not, it's possible for vegetarians and meat-lovers to share a meal. Chef Peter Berley provides recipes that work equally well meatless or meat-full in a new cookbook called The Flexitarian Table. Flexetarianism is part-time vegetarianism, with an emphasis on grains, lean proteins, and beans.

Weigh in: If you have both vegetarians and meat-eaters in your family, we want to hear from you. What's your favorite recipe that can be adjusted to suit everybody?
Profiting from Global Warming
Canada's prime minister Stephen Harper is in talks with President Bush right now, and Harper is asserting his nation's claim to the Northwest Passage through the warming, resource-rich Arctic. An ice-free North Pole would offer important new shipping lanes and an estimated 175 billion barrels of oil and 912 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. Russia and Denmark are also staking their claims to the Arctic, but the United States insists it is international territory. Journalist McKenzie Funk joins us from an Alaskan icebreaker to talk about why cashing in on global warming could become the Great Game of the 21st century. Funk is the author of an article in the September issue of Harper's Magazine called "Cold Rush: The Coming Fight for the Melting North."

Frank McCourt
The Leonard Lopate Show
Frank McCourt has been a guest many times on this show over the years, starting in 1996 for the memoir, Angela’s Ashes, that would earn him a Pulitzer Prize. Fame came to him late in life, after he’d retired at the age of 65 from teaching English and creative writing at public schools here in New York. He was a sweet, eloquent man who spoke with grace and humility; he just died at the age of 78 after a battle with cancer. You can hear him speaking with Leonard Lopate for his Survival Kit in 2000, and in 2005, for his memoir, Teacher Man.
