The Leonard Lopate Show

Horsemeat Sushi?

Friday, June 29, 2007

Atlantic bluefin tuna has been so overfished that some sushi chefs are looking at unusual alternatives. We'll find out whether deer and horsemeat might turn up in sushi anytimes soon. Leonard talks to ecologist Carl Safina of the Blue Ocean Institute.

Many people take fish oil capsules for heart disease (for alpha 2 omega fatty acids), especially to lower triglycerides. There are synthetic drugs called fibrates that also lower triglycerides quite well. Given the current situation with depleted fish stocks, should there be a voluntary ban on fish oil capsules and more of an emphasis on fibrates?

Interesting headline -- though more interesting the first time around

(Monday's NY Times: "Waiter, there's deer in my sushi")
