    A Home in New York

Guest host Alice Rhee explores the offerings at the first-ever National Asian-American Theatre Festival here in New York. Then, Michael Ondaatje tells us about his latest novel. And we ask photographers from Magnum about the challenges of covering major conflicts throughout the world. Plus: on this week’s Underreported, we talk to young refugees who have resettled in New York.

Underreported: Resettling Refugees in New York City

For the many refugees who arrive in New York each year, building a new life takes a lot of courage and resilience. On today's Underreported, we hear about the realities of everyday life for some of New York's resettled refugees. 19-year-old Fatu Sanoe arrived here from Guinea with her family in September 2005. They fled their home country of Liberia when fighting broke out there. Mo Nom Tee Kham is a 20-year-old Burmese woman who came to New York three years ago via Thailand. Christine Petrie is deputy vice president of resettlement at the International Rescue Committee.

The National Asian-American Theatre Festival

Hundreds of Asian-American theatre artists from across the US are in New York for the first-ever National Asian-American Theatre Festival which runs through June 24th. Tisa Chang is a Festival organizer and founder of Pan Asian Repertory Theatre, a NY-based company celebrating its 30th anniversary this season. Alan Muraoka is a Broadway actor (and Mr. Hooper on Sesame Street), who is directing William Finn's musical Falsettoland. They talk about why the Festival is important, and discuss the powers and perils of color-blind casting.

Michael Ondaatje's New Novel

Michael Ondaatje (author of The English Patient) imagines what happens when a makeshift family is torn apart, in his new novel Divisadero.

Divisadero is available for purchase at amazon.com

Monona Rossol on 50 Million Chemicals

The Leonard Lopate Show

On September 7, 2009, scientists working for the Chemical Abstract Service (which assigns identification numbers to all new chemicals) entered the 50-millionth chemical substance into their Registry. Chemist and industrial hygienist Monona Rossol, President and Founder of Arts, Crafts & Theater Safety, took a look at what all these new substances are, where they are coming from, and how they affect our health. Rossol also responded to listener comments and questions. You can read her answers here.

Our 3-ingredient Challenge wins a James Beard Award

The Leonard Lopate Show

On May 3, the Lopate Show won its third James Beard Award for our 3-ingredient challenge. In August, we asked our listeners to call in and name 3 ingredients and then challenged New York chef and 3-ingredient expert Rozanne Gold to whip up a recipe! You can listen to the 3-ingredient challenge and get some inspiration for simple, delicious, and unexpected dishes.
