In Our Midst
On today’s Underreported, we turn our attention to the Midwest, and ask why it gets so little national coverage. Then, former supermodel Paulina Porizkova tells us about her debut novel. And Barbara Kingsolver explains what her family learned by eating only locally-grown food for a year. Plus, Colm Meaney and Eve Best discuss their roles in the Broadway revival of Eugene O’Neill’s A Moon for the Misbegotten.
Underreported: Missing the Midwest
The American Midwest is often ignored or oversimplified by the mainstream media. We'll look into why coverage of the Midwest is becoming even thinner, and catch up on some of the issues that haven't made the headlines in New York. Michael Massing, whose article "Missing Middle" appears in the Columbia Journalism Review, is joined by Tori Ekstrand, assistant professor of journalism at Bowling Green State University in Ohio.
Underreported: An Update on Kashmir
We continue our Underreported coverage on the Kashmir Separatist Movement, with an update on Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf's proposal for a solution to the Kashmir dispute. And we discuss whether Indian and Pakistani troops could withdraw from Kashmir anytime soon. Michael Deibert recently returned from Kashmir, and has an in-depth piece on these issues in the upcoming edition of the World Policy Journal.

On September 7, 2009, scientists working for the Chemical Abstract Service (which assigns identification numbers to all new chemicals) entered the 50-millionth chemical substance into their Registry. Chemist and industrial hygienist Monona Rossol, President and Founder of Arts, Crafts & Theater Safety, took a look at what all these new substances are, where they are coming from, and how they affect our health.
