    The Power of Observation

We start today’s show with two shocking documentaries about what’s happening in Iraq and Afghanistan. Later on, George Konrád talks about how surviving the Holocaust shaped his life as a writer. Plus, the award-winning Norwegian novelist Per Petterson stops by. And a die-hard baseball fan offers tips on how to watch games like an expert, on Please Explain.

Life with the 101st Airborne Division

John Laurence followed soldiers from the elite 101st Airborne Division for 14 months for his documentary, "I Am an American Soldier." He takes us from stateside preparations to deployment in Iraq, and back home again. He's joined by soldier Brian Little, who works undercover for the NYPD when not serving.

"I Am an American Soldier" is playing at the Tribeca Film Festival.

Taxi to the Dark Side

Alex Gibney tells us about writing and directing "Taxi to the Dark Side," a documentary about an Afghan taxi driver who died from injuries inflicted by guards and interrogators at Bagram Air Force Base.

"Taxi to the Dark Side" is playing at the Tribeca Film Festival.

A Hungarian Life

George Konrád, one of the most prominent writers in Eastern Europe, was one of only four Jewish children from his village in Hungary to survive the Holocaust. In A Guest in My Own Country, he talks about how WWII shaped his life.

Novels from Norway

Norwegian novelist Per Petterson tells us about his new novel Out Sealing Horses, about two older men confronting their shared past as they prepare for winter in a remote part of Norway. And he talks about his previous novel In the Wake, which was his American debut.

Tributes: Jeanne-Claude

The Leonard Lopate Show

Jeanne-Claude created environmental works of art with her husband and fellow-conspirator/collaborator Christo. Together, they wrapped the Reichstag in Berlin, the Pont-Neuf in Paris, and created The Gates, with billowy orange drapes, in Central Park. Jeanne-Claude just died at the age of 74. You can hear Leonard Lopate’s last interview with them both, from July 19, 1999.

Please Explain: Eco-Labels

The Leonard Lopate Show

Your broccoli, shampoo, and air conditioner might bear labels declaring them to be organic, cruelty-free, or energy efficient, but what do those labels mean and are they true? Dr. Urvashi Rangan, Project Director for Consumer Reports' GreenerChoices.org and Consumers Union’s Senior Scientist for Policy Initiatives, and Dara O'Rourke, founder and CEO of GoodGuide.com, took a look at what eco-labels indicate, how standards are set, and what they mean for consumers and manufacturers around the world.
