India's Last Mughal

Thursday, April 05, 2007

William Dalrymple describes the 1857 Siege of Delhi, which began as a resistance to British control and ended by claiming thousands of lives. In his book The Last Mughal, Dalrymple explains why the Mughal Dynasty – which had controlled much of India for centuries – was another casualty of the Siege of Delhi.

I am an amateur historian and cartridge collector. I would like to ask Mr Dalrymple if he could verify his statement that the British actually used lard (pig fat) on the Enfield cartridges (the cause of the Delhi uprising). The religious leaders who were strongly anti British were the ones who made this accusation. I would think that a wax such as bees wax was used to waterproof the cartridges. Lard or any animal fat would quickly spoil in the heat rendering the cartridges useless. My friends who collect cartridges agree with me. I would be most interested in his reply.

Your interview with William Dalrymple was frascinating! Thank you for bringing this brilliant, articulate and engaging historian to your show. I sat down and listened to the whole thing! Now I want to go get his book.

    Many, many thanks
