The Leonard Lopate Show

Killer of Sheep

Charles Burnett's 1977 independent film, Killer of Sheep, captured the look and feel of LA's Watts district. Now, 30 years after it was made, it's finally being given a theatrical release. It opens this Friday at the IFC Center. Leonard talks to Henry Sanders, who starred in Killer of Sheep, UCLA archivist Ross Lipman, who restored the film; Dennis Doros, vice president of Milestone Films; and Danny Glover.

I was gazing idly at the TV screen when the movie aired on TCM 1/21. I remembered fond times as a child when my father's friend used to pick up me and my siblings to go make home movies. Watching the movie, my mouth dropped when I recognized my brother on the screen, then my other two brothers appeared, then me and my sister! It slowly dawned on me that THIS was the "Charles" from my childhood! Imagine my surprise and enjoyment!! What a wonderment to see us as children on the screen..to be involved with one great timeless movie.
