New York City Bees

Tuesday, March 27, 2007

Studies have shown that urban bees are often healthier and more productive than their rural counterparts. In light of the recent wave of massive bee death throughout the US, we ask how New York City's bees are faring, and find out why the city can be an ideal habitat for bees. David Graves keeps hundreds of thousands of honeybees in Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Manhattan. Dr. Jerome G. Rozen is a bee expert from the American Museum of Natural History.

Apis Mellifera only live for 40 days or so EXCEPT those "born" around November, because those usually overwinter in a ball inside the hive! So they usually live for about 3 or 4 months.

Isn't that interesting? If you imagine that in humans, it would mean that most humans live for 70 years, except those born in a certain month who live for 210 years!!

    I love bees.
