    What's the Buzz?

John Kerry and Teresa Heinz Kerry talk about their campaign to make the environment a national priority. Then, we find out why New York City's bees may be healthier than those in the countryside. Plus: a travel writer gives a disturbing account of her undercover experiences as an airport screener-in-training. And record and film producer Joe Boyd tells us about working with Muddy Waters, Bob Dylan, Pink Floyd, and Nick Drake.

New York City Bees

Studies have shown that urban bees are often healthier and more productive than their rural counterparts. In light of the recent wave of massive bee death throughout the US, we ask how New York City's bees are faring, and find out why the city can be an ideal habitat for bees. David Graves keeps hundreds of thousands of honeybees in Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Manhattan. Dr. Jerome G. Rozen is a bee expert from the American Museum of Natural History.

Undercover Airport Screener

Condé Nast Traveler writer Barbara Peterson tells us what she learned by going undercover as an airport screener-in-training for two months at a major US airport.

The Leonard Lopate Show

On September 7, 2009, scientists working for the Chemical Abstract Service (which assigns identification numbers to all new chemicals) entered the 50-millionth chemical substance into their Registry. Chemist and industrial hygienist Monona Rossol, President and Founder of Arts, Crafts & Theater Safety, took a look at what all these new substances are, where they are coming from, and how they affect our health. Rossol also responded to listener comments and questions. You can read her answers here.
