The Leonard Lopate Show

Checking in on Executive Power

After Watergate, the Senate formed the Church Committee to investigate abuses of power by the intelligence community and the Office of the President. Frederick A.O. Schwarz served as chief counsel. Now, thirty years later, Mr. Schwartz and co-author Aziz Z. Huq explore how the Bush Administration is eliminating checks on executive power.

I was glad to finally hear someone say that we must believe in the idea of a republic,if we expect to retain it. It is, after all, only an idea. And generally, not popular with powerful men. I don't think many people understand how fragile our situation is and how determined Bush and co. are to cynically use our ignorance to undermine everything we have. If you look around the world you can see how unusual our republic is. It takes hard work and diligence to maintain freedom. We have become lotus eaters! Our republic is so young. We could be a flash in the pan! I have always thought that I sounded like Woody Allen worring about the universe expanding when I say this but with the reign of George II it seems very important. We need more civics classes! Thank you for everything you do!- Karen
