For 20 years, Christopher Gray has been digging up dirt on New York City's buildings in his “Streetscapes” column in the New York Times. And for the past few weeks, he's been hard at work researching the buildings you submitted to our latest listener photo project. He tells us what he uncovered, and asks for help on a few buildings that have him stumped.

    Does anyone have suggestions on how to do research on an old NY building? My grandfather owned a coffee shop on 5th Avenue @ 29th St. and I'd like to know where to look for photos - perhaps in some municipal archive?

    My wife and I have been frequent tourists to NYC since our son lived there. Our great love of NPR on XM brought me to the Lopate show and a chance to hear this marvelous topic. My hobby, architectural photography, is a shared rarity and this site was a joy. NYC is one of my favorite places to shoot and I hope others have gotten the pleasure from this site that I have. Thanks to Leonard and his staff at WNYC!!
