Tuesday, August 15, 2006

Blanche Kelso Bruce was born into slavery in 1841. But after the Civil War, his political success led to his being elected the first black man to serve a full term in the U.S. Senate in 1874. In The Senator and the Socialite, Lawrence Otis Graham tells the story of how Senator Bruce helped break many of the racial barriers of his time.
