Rites and Rituals

Friday, June 09, 2006

On today’s show, guest host Tony Guida asks Robert Altman about his latest film, “A Prairie Home Companion,” a collaboration with Garrison Keillor. And Martha Wainwright will perform songs from the documentary, “Leonard Cohen: I’m Your Man.” Plus, a conversation with jazz icon Lorraine Gordon. And to start it all off: this week’s Please Explain is all about tea.

Please Explain: Tea

Last year, tea production hit an all-time high in India--the world's largest tea producer. On today’s Please Explain, Karen Dunlap, tea sommelier for the tea importing company In Pursuit of Tea, and Tom Standage, the author of A History of the World in 6 Glasses, examine the history and culture of tea.

Martha Wainwright Celebrates Leonard Cohen

Martha Wainwright pays tribute to one of her favorite singer songwriters, with a live performance of songs from the documentary “Leonard Cohen: I’m Your Man.”

The Village Vanguard

Lorraine Gordon celebrates seventy years of the Village Vanguard, which she took over after the death of her husband Max in 1989. She'll tell us about some of the club's most memorable nights, from the 1940s to today.

Altman's "A Prairie Home Companion"

Robert Altman describes teaming up with Garrison Keillor the new film “A Prairie Home Companion,” a fictionalized, backstage account of the favorite public radio program.
