Secret Daughter

Thursday, May 25, 2006

In 1957, when June Cross was four years old, her white mother sent her to live with a black family. June's dark hair and skin made it impossible for her to pass for white, and strained her relationship with her mother. In Secret Daughter, Ms. Cross describes pretending to be adopted, as her mother tried to avoid the scandal of having a mixed race, out-of-wedlock daughter.
