To Breed or Not To Breed
Whether or not to have a child is a huge decision. On today's show, three writers share their own personal - and sometimes painful - decisions about parenthood. Plus: the life of controversial American artist Thomas Eakins. Also, how Israel's climate may have affected the development of Judaism. And Broadway lyricist Sheldon Harnick reminisces about the many songs he's known, loved, and written over his long career.
Maybe Baby
Leonard talks to Lori Leibovich, editor of the new book Maybe Baby, and two of the book's contributors, Kathryn Harrison and Larry Smith.
Events: Lori Leibovich, Kathryn Harrison, Amy Benfer, and Michelle Goldberg will be speaking and signing books
Tuesday, April 4 at 7:30 pm
Park Slope Barnes and Noble, Seventh Avenue at 6th Street
Troubled Soul
Thomas Eakins was a controversial Philadelphia portrait artist. In 1886, he was fired from his teaching post at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts for insisting that female students work from nude male models, and he was accused of engaging in molestation and improper relations. Sidney Kirkpatrick is the author of the biography The Revenge of Thomas Eakins.
The Natural History of the Bible
Environmental scientist Daniel Hillel says that environment, climate and topology have played an important part in the development of the Jewish faith. His new book is The Natural History of the Bible.
Sheldon Harnick and the American Songbook
Sheldon Harnick is one of the last living lyricists of the Golden Age of the American Songbook. His greatest claim to fame is probably Fiddler on the Roof. His Broadway career spans more than half a century – he collaborated on songs for the hits Fiorello (1959) and She Loves Me (1963), among many others.
On April 8, 9, and 10, Sheldon Harnick will be co-hosting Lyrics and Lyricists with Rob Fisher at the 92 St. Y. For tickets and information: »www.92Y.org/Lyrics or 212-415-5500.
