    Inside Stories

Janis Karpinski is the highest ranking officer to have been punished for the prisoner abuses that occurred at Abu Ghraib prison. She tells us her side of the story on today’s show. And, Voletta Wallace looks back at the life and music of her murdered son, the hip-hop legend Notorious B.I.G.

One Woman’s Army

Janis Karpinski was the first and only female General Officer commanding troops in a combat zone in Iraq. She also ran Abu Ghraib. In One Woman's Army, she tells her side of the story, and argues that she was turned into a scapegoat for the prison abuses that occurred there.

Music: “West Point,” “Congratulations,” “The Conspiracy” and “Kent’s Story” from the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack of “The General’s Daughter.” Original music composed by Carter Burwell; distributed by Milan Records

Biggie

Voletta Wallace celebrates the music of her legendary son, the late hip-hop star Notorious B.I.G., in a new memoir: Biggie. As she works to keep the investigation into his death open, Ms. Wallace looks back on the night her son was killed, and tells us what she believes was behind his murder.

Music: “Hypnotize” and “Mo Money, Mo Problems” from “Life After Death;” “Big Poppa” and “Juicy” from “Ready To Die” and “Only You (Bad Boy Remix)” from “112”; all albums released by Bad Boy Records.

Tributes: Jeanne-Claude

The Leonard Lopate Show

Jeanne-Claude created environmental works of art with her husband and fellow-conspirator/collaborator Christo. Together, they wrapped the Reichstag in Berlin, the Pont-Neuf in Paris, and created The Gates, with billowy orange drapes, in Central Park. Jeanne-Claude just died at the age of 74. You can hear Leonard Lopate’s last interview with them both, from July 19, 1999.

Please Explain: Eco-Labels

The Leonard Lopate Show

Your broccoli, shampoo, and air conditioner might bear labels declaring them to be organic, cruelty-free, or energy efficient, but what do those labels mean and are they true? Dr. Urvashi Rangan, Project Director for Consumer Reports' GreenerChoices.org and Consumers Union’s Senior Scientist for Policy Initiatives, and Dara O'Rourke, founder and CEO of GoodGuide.com, took a look at what eco-labels indicate, how standards are set, and what they mean for consumers and manufacturers around the world.
