Conditions at Guantanamo Bay

The vast majority of detainees at Guantanamo Bay have not been charged with any offenses. Many have been held for over 3 ½ years with no expectations of when they might be released. New Yorker staff writer Jane Meyer, who recently visited the detention center, and Michael Ratner from the Center for Constitutional Rights, join us for an update on the treatment of detainees at Guantanamo.

Symptoms of Withdrawal

Christopher Kennedy Lawford, the son of Rat Pack actor Peter Lawford and JFK’s sister Patricia Kennedy, knew Frank Sinatra and Marilyn Monroe during his unusual childhood. He also lived through the assassination of his two uncles—John and Bobby Kennedy. Then, in the 1970s he developed an addiction to drugs and alcohol that nearly killed him. He looks back on his struggles with addiction, as well as with celebrity, in his new memoir: Symptoms of Withdrawal.

The Leonard Lopate Show

Jeanne-Claude created environmental works of art with her husband and fellow-conspirator/collaborator Christo. Together, they wrapped the Reichstag in Berlin, the Pont-Neuf in Paris, and created The Gates, with billowy orange drapes, in Central Park. Jeanne-Claude just died at the age of 74. You can hear Leonard Lopate’s last interview with them both, from July 19, 1999.

Please Explain: Eco-Labels

The Leonard Lopate Show

Your broccoli, shampoo, and air conditioner might bear labels declaring them to be organic, cruelty-free, or energy efficient, but what do those labels mean and are they true? Dr. Urvashi Rangan, Project Director for Consumer Reports' GreenerChoices.org and Consumers Union’s Senior Scientist for Policy Initiatives, and Dara O'Rourke, founder and CEO of GoodGuide.com, took a look at what eco-labels indicate, how standards are set, and what they mean for consumers and manufacturers around the world.
