    Confronting the Past

Alvin and Larry Ubell, the self-appointed “Gurus of How-To,” explore the intricacies of home repair. Then, Sir Antony Sher tells us about the challenges of bringing Primo Levi’s holocaust memoirs to life in a new one-man stage adaptation. We’ll hear about Martha Cooley’s new novel, Thirty-Three Swoons. And journalist Dennis King sheds some light on Fred Newman and Lenore Fulani’s controversial Independence Party.

Primo

British actor Antony Sher says it's impossible to put Auschwitz on a stage or on screen. But that hasn’t stopped him from adapting the Italian chemist and Holocaust survivor Primo Levi’s 1947 memoir, If This Is a Man, into a one-man play: Primo.

Thirty-Three Swoons

Martha Cooley, author of the bestseller The Archivist, tells us about her new novel, Thirty-Three Swoons. In the book, a mysterious man in a mask and tuxedo haunts the main character’s dreams—spurring her to look for explanations for these visions in her murky past.

Controversial Politics

Journalist Dennis King criticizes Mayor Bloomberg’s acceptance of the Independence Party’s endorsement. Mr. King desribes the party as a political cult, headed by Lenora Fulani and founded by her guru, Fred Newman. The group recently stirred up controversy when Ms. Fulani maintained that the comment she made ten years ago about Jews being “mass murderers of people of color,” was not anti-Semitic.
