Kenyan-born runner Lornah Kiplagat and American Collen De Reuck are two of the favorites competing in the upcoming New York Road Runner’s "Circle of Friends Mini 10K." They stop by with a look at the state of female distance runners. Then, German film star Hanna Schygulla discusses her current film retrospective at MoMA. Next, Esther Cohen tells us about her new novel, Book Doctor. And in our regular Please Explain feature, we ask two doctors to help us navigate the sea of vitamins, herbs, and minerals available as dietary supplements.
Female Distance Running
This Saturday, some of the world’s top female distance runners will vie for top prize in the New York Road Runner’s “Circle of Friends Mini 10K.” Kenyan-born Lornah Kiplagat, who is competing for the Netherlands, and Colleen De Reuck, one of America’s finest runners, will both be running. They join us for a look at the state of women’s distance running, what it takes to be a champion among the international elite, and what are some of the challenges female road racers face worldwide.

German film star Hanna Schygulla discusses her 11-film retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art. She appeared in eighteen of Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s films, as well as films by Jean-Luc Godard, Margarethe von Trotta, and Andrzej Wajda.

Book Doctor
Esther Cohen shares her new novel, Book Doctor. The story follows the developing relationship between a woman who massages odd manuscripts into workable books, and a disgruntled tax accountant intent on writing an exposé of his recent divorce.

There's a dizzying array of vitamins, herbs, and minerals available to treat almost any health problem. On today's Please Explain feature, we’ll ask the experts which supplements really help, and which ones don't. We’ll hear from Dr. David Talmage, Director of the Masters of Science in Human Nutrition Program and the Post-Doctoral Training in Human Nutrition at the Institute for Human Nutrition at Columbia University, and Dr. Wahida Karmally, Director of Nutrition in The Irving Center for Clinical Research and Associate Research Scientist and Lecturer in Dentistry at Columbia University Medical Center.

The Leonard Lopate Show
Jeanne-Claude created environmental works of art with her husband and fellow-conspirator/collaborator Christo. Together, they wrapped the Reichstag in Berlin, the Pont-Neuf in Paris, and created The Gates, with billowy orange drapes, in Central Park. Jeanne-Claude just died at the age of 74. You can hear Leonard Lopate’s last interview with them both, from July 19, 1999.
