Phyllis GalemboRunning With the Devil
Amby Burfoot and David Willey of Runner’s World magazine talk about Sunday’s New York City Marathon. Mr. Burfoot can even share what it’s like to win one - he’s a former champion of the Boston Marathon. Then art historian and novelist Barbara Novak talks about her latest work of fiction, The Margaret Ghost. And photographer Phyllis Galembo and scary-culture expert David Skal explain how a lucrative Halloween industry has supplanted what was once a truly frightening holiday.
Amby Burfoot and David Willey
The New York City Marathon is this Sunday, Nov. 2, and here
to help us get ready are Amby Burfoot and David Willey of Runner’s World magazine. (Mr. Burfoot is the executive editor and Mr. Willey is the
editor-in-chief.) They explain why running 26.2 miles in a
single stretch is an increasingly popular activity.
Barbara Novak
Barbara Novak shares her latest novel, The Margaret
Ghost. It’s about a young professor’s obsession with
the great feminist intellectual Margaret Fuller, whom Henry
James dubbed “the Margaret-ghost.”
Phyllis Galembo and David Skal
Phyllis Galembo’s book, Dressed For Thrills, is a photographic documentary
of 100 years of Halloween costume history. And David Skal has written a study of the origins of Halloween; it’s called Death Makes a Holiday. They explain the cultural significance of October 31st.

Please Explain: Eco-Labels
The Leonard Lopate Show
Your broccoli, shampoo, and air conditioner might bear labels declaring them to be organic, cruelty-free, or energy efficient, but what do those labels mean and are they true? Dr. Urvashi Rangan, Project Director for Consumer Reports' GreenerChoices.org and Consumers Union’s Senior Scientist for Policy Initiatives, and Dara O'Rourke, founder and CEO of GoodGuide.com, took a look at what eco-labels indicate, how standards are set, and what they mean for consumers and manufacturers around the world.
