Stephen Eliot chronicles his formative years spent in the University of Chicago’s Sonia Shankman Orthogenic school, then run by controversial psychiatrist Bruno Bettelheim, known for his unorthodox and often cruel mental treatment. Eliot's book is called Not the Thing I Was: Thirteen Years at Bruno Bettelheim's Orthogenic School.

Dr. Bettelheim was not a psychiatrist. The cruel treatment was no often and Dr. B's method were unorthodox in that they were based on the needs of a child. The book is dedicated to Dr. Bettelheim.
