Jane Jacobs challenged and changed the way people view cities. At a time when others were calling for the bulldozing of slums, she proposed instead to have even more diversity and density. The Death and Life of Great American Cities is her single most influential book, and quite possibly the most influential American book on urban planning.

Jane Jacobs died on Tuesday, April 25th at the age of 89.
