Russ & Daughters

Friday, March 08, 2013

The former owner/proprietor of the appetizing store Russ & Daughters, Mark Russ Federman, tells the story of an immigrant family’s journey from a pushcart in 1907 to a Lower East Side institution. Russ & Daughters: Reflections and Recipes from the House that Herring Built is about how a hardworking family turned a passion for selling perfectly smoked and pickled fish into a strong business.

On the Upper West Side, the streets are redolent with smoked fish and appetizing—appetizing! What a word! My grandmother and her sister used to throw it around when we visited. Appetizing is like a whole bunch of fatty crap that you scarf down before you even start

Meringue cookies. I substituted Splenda into a recipe for meringue cookies and it fluffed up fine. But when I folded in chocolate it flopped and cookies were flat not tall and fluffy. Suggestions???

Is MIRACLEWHIP made of remainders of other products?
A friend from the UK who worked for Kraft's advertising agency said you wouldn't want to know what is in that stuff
