Peter Gelb, general manager of the Metropolitan Opera, and Susan Froemke, director of the documentary “Wagner’s Dream,” discuss the making of Richard Wagner’s four-part Ring Cycle. It was filmed over five years and gives a behind-the-scenes view of the making of the complex, 16-hours opera. “Wagner’s Dream” premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival April 25, opens in HD nationwide on May 7.

Saw the Ring Cycle with this set. I felt as though I might leap out of my seat with shock, awe and sheer admiration and adoration!
Hmmm..."Bryan Terfel" - I've never heard of him before. Really, Bryn (brin) Terfel (tare-vel) is not that hard to say!
"I'm not wedded to the past"
You don't have to tell us that - we know that. Yes, what not to love about Wagner? Who needs to be educated when one can be ... a New Yorker?
I know it has become quite trendy to hate Gelb, attack the Ring and whinge about every single thing happening at the Met, but I loved the Ring, overall. I'm not wedded to the past, and I have no need to be trendy.
From what I could tell, the audience in my productions also loved it. The silent majority, I suspect.
Gelb purchased an broken down Corvaire and is trying to sell it as a Ferrari. His thorough lack of operatic knowledge and stagecraft shines through again. The Metropolitan Opera Board should finally understand he is truly Beverly's revenge.
Where's my comment.
Barbarians celebrate barbarism.
Wagner's dream has been a nightmare for many millions. Why Gelb and Lopate are so excited about the topic and "events" is beyond me.
Actually, not. Predictable. When there is no conscience ...
Actually, I was passing by the Lincoln Square yesterday watching "ladies" in in "rich" black and retarded faces heading toward the event.
Disgusting. I am pretty sure that my former friend flew in from her neo-Nazi camp in Southern California to ... celebrate.
When will Eric Owens get to do Wotan? He's got a more powerful voice than Terfel, and would thus be more god-like.
This Ring is the worst production and the efforts made by the leadership to defend it shows that they realize that this was a multi- million dollar mistake. The above commentator is correct. Why doesn't Mr. Gelb avail himself to critics? Because he cannot accept criticism and fundamentally, he knows he must defend what cost so much. The documentary is just part of the propoganda. Sad.
Leonard is a great interviewer on so many topics-- could nobody tell him how to pronounce Bryn Terfel's name?
problem w/ Lepage productions (that performers have told me) is the near-cruel challenges to performers that his set designs require
Why was Mr. Gelb not available to Zachary Woolfe of the NY Times for his excellent,in-depth report on the Met's HD performances across America? Best of Season: Khovanshchina,Enchanted Island, Satyagraha.
The stage computer seemed to come under somewhat better control as the season went on, but it was still a ridiculous obstacle to the operas from the get-go. Faithful audiences shouldn't be forced to concentrate on whether the scenery is working.
