It was known in 1981 (I was working in the Columbia University Medical Center ICU at the time)as GRID--gay related immuno dificiency syndromw. Interviewers from the Dept of Health were busy going from bedside to bedside of dying young men, trying to figure out commonalities to determine the cause.
