Peter Piot talks about his career in microbiology, from studying the Ebola virus to pioneering AIDS research and policy. As founder and director of UNAIDS, he negotiated policies with leaders from Fidel Castro to Thabo Mbeki and helped turn the tide of the AIDS epidemic. His book No Time to Lose: A Life in Pursuit of Deadly Viruses captures the urgency and excitement of being on the front lines in the fight against today’s deadliest diseases.

Leonard, how disappointing that you mischaracterized how HIV was known here in US. It was known in 1981 (I was working in the Columbia University Medical Center ICU at the time)as GRID--gay related immuno dificiency syndromw. Interviewers from the Dept of Health were busy going from bedside to bedside of dying young men, trying to figure out commonalities to determine the cause. Then it began to be seen in IV drug users and the next year it was seen in Haitian immigrants. Read the history to refresh your memory. www.avert.org has reasonable information.
Among the very first victims of HIV were the non human primates and other animals that were given the virus and allowed to waste away in laboratories in the name of scientific research.
At the same time, we're telling people to investigate sexual alternatives and that all are acceptable. And 15,000 Americans die each year (if that's the number).
I don't think we will get a cure. "They" have curing cancer for years..we will probably just received more efficient ways to control the disease.
When can we expect a cure?
Why did Botswana, a long-term stable democracy, do so badly in preventing the spread of AIDS even after the cause & effective prevention were known (& even after the US finally started dealing w/it)?
They tell us that the test for HIV is not fool proof ... Some one could test negative but still have HIV..well how do you guarantee the safety of the blood supply? There is to much mystery nonsense when it comes to the HIV epidemic .... Why would you do a different test on a vial of blood than a pint?
Aids cannot survive in the acidic environment of the healthy Vagina of ph less than 4.0
Semen has strong imune suppressing properties. Male to male anal sex allows semen (which is alkaline ) to be deposited in the anus (which is also alkaline) and then travel into the blood stream thru the lower intestine into the blood which is also alkaline . Aids is optimized to exist in the alkaline environment of the blood semen and anal canal. This is a fact. Females are designed after millions of years of heterosexual reproduction to be able to deal with the immune challenges of male sperm, and seminal fluids . Males are not
How much of Prez Bush's (43) $15 billion in 5 year, for AIDS in Africa, was actually dispersed? What was it used for? Abstinence training, condoms, antiretroviral drugs?
