Fawzia Koofi, the nineteenth daughter of a local village leader in rural Afghanistan discusses rising from abuse and hardship to become the first Afghani woman Parliament speaker. Her new book, The Favored Daughter: One Woman’s Fight to Lead Afghanistan into the Future, describes the Russian and Taliban regimes in Afghanistan, the murders of her father, brother, and husband, and attempts on her life. She also describes the future and freedoms she wants for all the women of Afghanistan.

I think we should deport all our radical right wing gop candidates to afghanistan, where they can join the taliban and rule over people who have no tradition of citizenship in a modern,scientific, rational democracy. It's far away, but not psychologically.
The broadcast teasers for this segment were overly sensationalist and stereotyped in their implications, as though Fawzia Koofi was deliberately abandoned on a mountain top to die and then rescued. The truth is more complex and nuanced. It is certainly no less a dramatic story, but one that warrants being represented accurately. The hype in the teasers was more characteristic of FOX and not what I would expect from WNYC.
