Playwright Paula Vogel, Tony Award winner Norbert Leo Butz, and Elizabeth Reaser talk about Vogel’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play, “How I Learned to Drive.” The play explores the complex relationship between Li’l Bit (Reaser) and her Uncle Peck (Butz), as a series of driving lessons progresses from innocence to something much darker.

Is this based on a Joyce Carol Oates short story? It shares many similarities...
I don't see how it's "empowering" to, in effect, tell a girl that the way men drive is better & that the best she can do is to imitate it.
Is it worth delineating the difference between the pedophile and the ephebophile? The first is an adult dealing sexually with children. The second with post-pubescent adolescents. It doesn't mean one is less serious a crime than the other; but a young person who, while still innocent, is at a stage of sexual awakening is surely in a different dynamic with the adult than is a pre-pubescent child. Are we seeing the girl in the play in both stages? How does this affect the two actors?
I saw this play at Arena Stage in Washington DC many years ago and thought is was a wonderful piece of theatre- brave, funny and thoughtful. I just started listening to the show and was wondering why the playwright and actors feel the "p- word" doesn't apply to this play? I very much felt it was about the complexities of sexual abuse of young people which involve a big "p".
Ms. Vogel, I worked at the Hippodrome State Theatre when we did a production of "How I Learned to Drive" in (I believe) 1999. Congratulations! I look forward to seeing this new production and I am excited that new audiences will get to see this complex and interesting story. Best wishes to all of you for a wonderful run.
