Comedian and political commentator D. L. Hughley explains why he thinks the nation is heading in the wrong direction. In I Want You to Shut the F#ck Up: How the Audacity of Dopes Is Ruining America, he points out that despite the country’s pride in itself, we are no longer the best. In terms of life expectancy, we're 36th—tied with Cuba; in terms of literacy, we're 20th—behind Kazakhstan. He offers his opinions on what might improve our future.

Sorry, john from office - D.L. Hughley has bona fides as a political commentator...Have you seen his act? Seen his now-defunct TV show? Read his blog? He may not be Mort Sahl or Will Rogers but he's not just a joke teller.
@Sheldon. I agree with you on both counts.
On a different note: If Obama wins in November, what are these people
gonna do. So much for a post-racial America.
Hal, I understand that, but they would not be on a news program being asked questions of the day. WNYC, does this all the time, bring on some black "star" and let them spout off on issues. It does not happen with other races on WNYC.
Ice T will be on re: gun control and policing. Stay tuned.
@John: Many comedians do political satire. Mort Sahl, Lenny Bruce, Smothers Brothers, Carlin, etc. too numerous to list.
I'm a white parent (native NYer) and I told my 2 teenage sons how to behave and act with police (and in general.)
john from office -- Henny Youngman's brilliant "Bismarck Was a Herring; A Treatise on Politics and Fisheries 1815-1898," is still the standard college textbook on the subject.
Yes John - your condescension towards "blacks" continues.
On lighter note: Yes, if Obama had a spine during the state of the union, his presidency would have been different.
The soldiers in Fort Hood were not armed, they were being processed. This amn is ignorant.
Some dopes who are destroying the country are the ones that claim special status for themselves or their kids.
Autism is a serious disorder. Dopes categorize people with asperger disorder as autism. Bullsh*t!
D. L. Hughley, shut the fu*k up!
The commentators dont see the racism here. Would WNYC have Henny Youngman on to talk politics or israel, or Seinfeld?, No they would not. But because he is black, he comes on to speak on issues of the day. Treating blacks like children.
Oh and the guest before that! Marilyn Monroe- there's a relevant topic.
Not pushed!?! You've got to be kidding...Many leftwing Obama voters hoped that the inauguration was the end of it! We could rest and Obama would take care of it. We were naive. And we were willing to take a predicted rollback in the amount of power given to the Democrats in the 2008 cycle and let it be formed into a tidal wave of Tea Party mania.
From his Oath of Office forward, Obama - like any politician in his first term - was running for his second term. And the logic of Obama's campaign has ALWAYS been based on not alienating the Independent voters. Not appearing too black or too angry. The socialist/crypto-muslim/anti-business BS works for the haters but you can't alienate the broad middle that will deliver the mandate. Resultingly, his first administration has been far more timid than most of us would like to have seen but his service has been creditable and the country has improved. It ain't fixed but it is better.
The fault of Obama's first term not meeting its potential lies in Democratic voters who failed to turn up at the polls in November 2010. It's our fault why the Republicans have controlled so much of the agenda. We need to care enough about what happens next that we show up and vote.
@Michaelb-
Again, Wikipedia is helpful here...he's had a hit TV show and was one of the Kings of Comedy. Of course he's speaking about his book- wasn't the last guest on for the same reason??
I am loving this interview! I never knew of Mr. Hughley outside of a vague familiarity with his comedy personality, so this is eye-opening on multiple levels.
Now he's coming around! The stuff about his son IS engaging. This, I like.
Yes, the President of the United States is going to demand that a congressman be removed from the Capitol building during a state of the union speech.
That's the silliest thing I've heard since Mitt left London.
Sorry, this guest doesn't have anything new to say whatsoever re the current political status.
As far his the personal memoir aspect of his presentation, OK, but so far, so what?
What's this gentleman's bona fides? I mean, why is he being interviewed on the Lopate show? Oh, right, he's got a book out....
DL, Your point about name calling is valid, but the Obama campaign is calling Romney a felon. Is that racist too?
We spend tons of money on both the military AND education. That's typical spin and a cliche that won't get us anywhere. It misdirects the conversation in the same old paths....
Maybe he wouldn't change things for the worse.
@john from office. Ahh yes. You should be the arbiter of what
is relevant for everyone to say and hear.
Let me know if you, Bibi Netanyahu or David Koch will be available
lead us out of darkness and ignorance in any of the future shows. A lot of us have been waiting for decades someone like of you to point the way for us. If only cloning were available today, then we could make a million clones of you to save humanity from the likes of 50 Cent, Alec baldwin and D.L Hughley.
Also @ellenb I'm assuming you've never heard of DL Hughley from your wording: "seems lack of talent". Wikipedia is often helpful and taking your cues from the comments section, no matter what comment section, is ill advised.
@ellenb
Language evolves. Remember when 'sucks' was shocking and graphic?
i don't like that title esp on wnyc...it's the same as saying the f word, and the more it's used on the air the more it becomes every day talk. Thanks for that wnyc.....reading the other comments....seems lack of talent here. The more we see untalented people put forward as talented, the lower our culture sinks.
This guest is telling the USA what to do, a comic???, Reminds me of when Alec Baldwin came on to speak about Atomic Energy.
Next, 50 cent will come on to discuss Israel and the deficit.
He bemoans the fact that we're behind in literacy so he uses "f***" in the title of his book. Hmm...
@john from office. Message received. Black english vernacular is unwelcomed here at WNYC. Less we polute the air with that kind of
inferior form of speech. Right John.
I'll remember to use the "Negro" or "bro" since that seems acceptable to you.
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=bruh
there ya go, bruh.
When did bro become bruh??, please don't try to talk street just because he is black, bro.
Hey D.L, I really miss your show man. You
had the best damn morning radio show around
here. I'm really lookin' forward to hearing
what you've been up to bruh.
