Tom Perrotta discusses his latest novel, The Leftovers. It tells what happens when neighbors, friends and lovers suddenly vanish in an event known as the Sudden Departure. It describes what the bewildered citizens of a town called Mapleton go through when people suddenly disappear, and how everything changes—marriages, friendships, as well as the relationships between parents and children.

I just picked up a brand new copy at a branch of the JC public library. So lucky. I think I'm the first one to sign it out! : )
I just placed a hold on Perotta's book, NYPL. I'm number 267 for 35 copies. I'm patient. ;-)
I loved this book! Why isn't Perotta given the acclaim that Franzen was given? Freedom was a disaster with an essentially weird world view at its core. Leftovers gets at something different and better and more hopeful despite the characters' loopy choices.
